The new Ofsted EIF states that Ofsted inspectors will check that independent schools meet the standards set by the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations Schools will normally be notified of an inspection the day before however Ofsted may carry out standard inspection without notice.   The new guidance on RSE spells out that governors and school management must ensure the subject is ‘resourced, staffed and timetabled in a way that ensures that the school can fulfil its legal obligation’. Ofsted is an accountability mechanism, so has a critical role to play in monitoring what schools do and setting benchmarks for standards.

  Short inspections are an extension of this proportionate approach. An important point about the purpose of inspection is that it is more than data. Ofsted judgements reflect many aspects of school life, including how the school supports personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils and the effectiveness of leadership and management.
